In the heart of Queenstown, Amy found the perfect solution to transform her hairdressing business. With a vision of creating a warm and welcoming salon environment, Amy chose SheShed to bring her dream to life. Here’s her inspiring journey of turning a kitset cabin into a thriving salon.
When Amy began her search for a kitset cabin, SheShed stood out for its aesthetic appeal and suitability for the alpine setting of Queenstown. “I looked through a lot of companies, and SheShed really fit with the aesthetic that we were looking for.” Amy recalls. “We wanted a really warm, welcoming, cottagey vibe for our salon that made people just relax as soon as they walked in the door, and SheShed really nailed it with that one.”
Amy’s experience with SheShed was smooth and supportive, thanks to the dedicated assistance from the SheShed team. “Lizzie was always at the other end of the phone or a quick email back as soon as I needed her.” Amy shares. “She worked hard with our building consent and resource consent companies to achieve the result that we wanted. I felt well looked after during the process.”
Amy says, “The building of the cabin was a lot of fun. My husband and I decided to build it ourselves and took on the challenge over Christmas and New Year.”
“It’s a huge achievement to look at it now and realise how well we worked together as a team to create this amazing space for me to create in.” Amy recalls. “The instructions were fantastic, with step-by-step printed guides and a detailed video.”
Understandably, the decision to DIY the build and having no prior building knowledge meant Amy was met with some challenges along the way but she found support from both SheShed and her local community. “Each step was a learning curve, but referring back to the instruction video and calling the SheShed team was always very helpful.”
“We also had incredible help from friends. Our neighbour Josh, a builder, would pop over every couple of nights to help us out and show us some great tips and tricks. It was definitely the effort of our entire ‘village’ in Queenstown.”
The SheShed has had a positive impact on Amy’s work-life balance and business operations too! Previously a mobile hairdresser, Amy now enjoys the convenience of having a dedicated salon space. “I love being able to walk into my own salon and just get to work,” she says. “I’m no longer carrying around my basin, buckets, boxes, and bags. I can now fit in two clients at the same time, and everyone enjoys their experience, leaving with a smile on their face.”
Amy’s clients have been delighted with the salon’s unique setting. “All my clients have loved it when they’ve walked in the door.” Amy shares.
“Keeping with the cottage vibe, I’ve decorated it with lots of quirky things that are a little bit different, just like me! They love the warm, toasty feeling in winter and the breeze through the great European windows in summer. The views of Coronet Peak and The Remarkables add to the relaxing atmosphere.”
Amy’s advice for anyone considering setting up a business in a SheShed is simple: “Honestly, just do it! I was on the fence for quite a while, and now that we have built our SheShed, I wish I did it years ago. It has improved my ability to work more efficiently and has given me something I am incredibly proud of. Any doubt I had in the beginning is completely gone, replaced with pure bliss. I absolutely love it, and so do my clients!”
