The Freedom To Work From Home - A Backyard Florist Studio on the Kapiti Coast.

Emily created a beautiful work-from-home floral studio using our 3x3m Star Cabin kitset. Being able to create from her own space, has created more structured time for work and spending time with her young family.

“It's created a space for me to be free and have fun with my work. I can leave the mess till the end of the day and not worry. I can display all my beautiful creations and number one I can have people in my space to talk flowers where they feel like it's an actual shop and not my home.”

Built by her husband (with a couple of small helping hands!) Opting for a rustic wooden log cabin style for the exterior " I love the way it's changing colours with age and the weather.” and white paint for the interior creating a lovely light-filled florist workshop.

We caught up with the lovely Kapiti Coast Florist to ask more about her cabin build, adding this extension to their family home and creating Emily’s dream creative workspace Eye Catcher Flowers, all from her backyard.

Why did you decide to build your SheShed and what do you use it for?

We decided to build our she shed as I was running my small floral business from inside our already small home my husband would get frustrated with the mess etc. Our plan was to always buy some land and start our business from a bigger property but covid hit and things got hard so we had to come up with other ways to make my business work. I use it for my floristry business Eye Catcher Flowers.

What difference has having a SheShed made for you?

Having the she shed has changed the way I work I’m not inside my house now so don’t feel like I need to stop everything and do the washing dishes or general cleaning. I get my two boys out the door for school kindy in the morning and then come home and start work I don’t go back into my house until the boys are home. It created a real difference between going to work and working from home.

What was the whole buy & build experience like for you?

The wellington team we dealt with was amazing no setbacks and arrived all perfect. Instructions were easy to follow we had the whole shed up within a weekend.

Did you build the SheShed by yourself, or have family or a friend help, or hire someone?

My brother-in-law and husband did the build together. My brother-in-law had a fair idea of what he was doing, as he has built a few cabins himself.

Did you particularly enjoy any specific part of the build process?

Not really one particular thing, I loved knowing it was coming to and the end so I could move in. The paint process was fun but hard.

What did you need to do to your property to prepare for the shed?

We put the sheshed in our driveway which is a gravel driveway. So we had to clear the area of gravel and make walkways around the shed. We also had to build a platform on which the shed would sit and make sure this was balanced etc to hold the weight.

What paint colours and/or interior style and furnishing did you choose for your shed?

We went with a natural look on the outside. I love the way it's changing colours with age and the weather. The inside we painted all white except for the floor window and the doors we left all natural. Colour for me was so hard because I love it and really could have seen myself in a light pink or blue shed but after many conversations, we decided my creations and flowers will give the space enough colour. Which it has and I love taking photos of my flowers on the white back drop.

What things didn’t go to plan with the build process?

It honestly was a very smooth process the thing that didn’t go to plan for me was waiting for my husband and brother-in-law to put it up. We also didn’t get enough paint for the inside so waited for enough money to do the last two walls this held me up again from moving in.

What’s your favourite aspect of the SheShed now that it has been completed?

It's created a space for me to be free and have fun with my work. I can leave the mess till the end of the day and not worry. I can display all my beautiful creations and number one I can have people in my space to talk flowers where they feel like it's an actual shop and not my home.

Also love all the little spaces and areas I’ve created with the area I think every day when I walk in, it's like a “wow I do this” moment.

When other people see it for the first time, what do they most comment on, or what are they most surprised about?

People usually comment wow its beautiful but also on the size of it. People think it's going to be this small little space but it's actually a very workable space. I Haven’t heard anyone say a bad word about it yet. Everybody loves it.

Why did you choose to buy a SheShed in particular, instead of any other brand of shed?

We had the idea for quite a while to make me my own space/floral shop but we just didn’t have the money to buy all the materials employ builders etc. I was scrolling Instagram one day and came across a lady building a hairdresser studio from a sheshed so I looked at the website and instantly fell In love. We could afford a star cabin if my husband built it himself. It was a win win cost wise and material wise all turned up as one, instructions were easy to follow and watch, and I got my dream shed.

Which Cabin Kitset is this?

Emily created this floral studio using our 3 x 3 metre Star Cabin, which has a beautiful log cabin cottage look and is perfect way to create more usable space for your work or even guest accommodation at home.  Click here to see info about the Star Cabin Kitset.
